One of the biggest puzzles with the B.T. Puppy label is understanding the 1969/70s releases. The late 45rpm's are odd enough but the LP output seems bizarre. Why after only 5 albums in the labels first 4 years, when they were having hits, did they put out 23 albums many in such limited quantities that they are nigh impossible to find and almost guaranteed not to sell? The Badcat Records site surmises that the label was involved in a tax scam similar to that operated by labels such as Tiger Lily, Guinness and Tomorrow. How it works, from what I can understand, is that the record label inflated the cost of recording, pressing and distributing the product and offset this against profits made elsewhere in the business. The B.T. Puppy releases were much earlier than the 1976-1978 period that most of this activity is assumed to have been going on but maybe Bright Tunes were trail-blazers?
So were The Tokens involved in a scam? I would say not, when interviewed by Steve Stanley for the CD notes for Rev-ola's release of "Intercourse", Mitch Margo said: "it was filling a contractual commitment with our distributor, Jubilee.... I wasn't pleased at all about it. There were very few printed and it is indeed a rarity." I assume breaking free of this commitment was behind The Tokens not only emptying their musical vaults but whilst they were having huge hits with the early Dawn records, making time to fly down to Fayetteville to record an album for Wyman Lee Wilkerson, a country-and-western singer/song writer businessman who had always wanted to sing professionally!
As noted in INFO on the B.T. Puppy 45s page, 50 per cent of the label was owned by Jubilee Records and after only two years cracks in the relationship were publicly beginning to show. In July 1967 Billboard reported that Bright Tunes Music and their president, Seymour Barash were suing Jubilee and it's subsidiary Jay-Gee Record Co. seeking additional royalty payments, punitive damages and breach of contract payments totalling well over $200,000 in regards to alleged under accounting of sales for Adam Clayton Powell's Jubilee album "Keep The Faith". I do not know if the court case preceded or the outcome but if true this under accounting of sales/pressings could explain why such great albums as "I Hear Trumpets Blow" and "Back To Back" can, 50 years later, easily be bought second-hand still in their shrink-wrap. Another news item of interest from Billboard, in September 1967 they reported "BT were forming a major offensive against bootlegging operations by New York & Long Island record retailers". The question, is were the shops behind the record pressings or the distributor?
Whatever the reason and despite the musical quality of some of these releases being suspect the late 60s/70s LPs and 45s do hold many treasures that without record biz shenanigans may never have been heard. Actually, see my Wants List in the Credits Page, there are still many releases I'm longing to hear!

*6 | The Tradewinds and The Town Criers are the same group, most likely Gerald Sappier, Edward Brander and assorted Tokens helping out on BVox. The first LP is a strange mix of original folk songs from various countries sung in their native tongue! The Town Criers album is more interesting: "If I Had A Hammer" (credited as written by G. Sappir-E. Brandon) was released as (Capitol 4801) in mono; "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream" as by Lenny & Dick on (Laurie 3216); the first recording of Greenwich & Barry's "Sweet Laurie, Fair Laurie", credited as 'Control' as is "Columbus, Georgia" but the words & music are by Gerald Sappir & Edward Brander (Edward Brandon), published by Bright Tunes Music Corp: and registered 17th August 1962. Seems fairly clear that all the tracks on the albums were produced by The Tokens while they were at Capitol Records. |
|
*7 | The Satans Four are assumed/accepted as being an alias used by The Tokens for The Del Satins and I'd have no argument with their "I Can't Find The Girl On My Mind" / "Oh Kathy" 45 but I'm not sure about other cuts on this LP. "Say There" is the same cut released on Colpix (long before The Del Satins signed to B.T. Puppy) credited to The Wonders. "It's Raining Outside" is released on Vol. 2 of The Del Satins "Back From Lunch" CD's but I wouldn't mind a vocal expert giving the cuts a listen. |

*8 | All tracks available on "Sweet Talkin' Girls - The Best Of The Chiffons (Stateside) CD
*9 | All tracks available on Rev-ola CD.
*10 | Blues singer Frankie Paris was the original vocalist on "Candida" but Hank Medress was not sure his vocal suited the cut so he approached Tony Orlando... Shame the track wasn't included on this LP.
With his arranger hat on, Norman Bergen recalls working the "Candida" session on Before Dawn. The band were Leslie Maynard (Organ), Bob Ealey (Drums) and Johnny Serrano (Guitar). |

*15 | The 'Sights & Sounds' section of local Lumberton, North Carolina newspaper, The Robesonian printed an article written by Lee Hamilton, complete with photo, on 7th May 1971 of a young Lumbertonian, singer-composer Wyman Lee Wilkerson whose first album of country-and-western songs, "Billy Wyman's Free Country" could be heard on all local radio stations. Maybe that's why a copy of this album, to my knowledge, has not turned up. We've been looking in the wrong place they are all in Lumberton! (As I hope you have noticed I have turned up a copy which came from...New York The LP is reviewed in some detail including these comments: "Released on the B. T. Puppy label, although the actual recording was accomplished at World Sound Studio in Fayetteville, the collection is appropriate to its title in being a kind of free-wheeling, yet folksy styled musical endeavour with a very definite flavour of his home territory, the farming country of Robeson County". "The Recording quality itself is also top-notch, as one would expect from a B.T. Puppy release (this label also carries such pop hits as "Knock Three Times" and "Candida") - (?!), and the stereophonic separation and balance are spacious yet intimate." |
|
*16 | Album re-released on a Sundazed CD
*17 | "I've Been Waiting For You" aka "Waiting For Something", "Buy Some, Try Some, Lie Some" aka "Commercial", "I'm A Droplet Of Water" aka "Droplets Of Water". All tracks are Warner Brothers period recordings and credited to M, M, M & S. For the later reissuses departing from the 'all for one and one for all' ethos the credit is correctly given as Mitch Margo. The Tim Hardin composed "If I Were A Carpenter" appears on this 'original' "Intercourse" collection but on none of the subsequent CD reissues. I assume this cuts inclusion on the B.T. Puppy album was the cause of Mitch Margo's dissatisfaction with the release. |
