This page, The Tokens at B.T. Puppy, includes their known recordings as The Tokens, Buddies, Four Winds and thir releases with The Kirby Stone Four, billed as being by The United States Double Quartet, on B.T. Puppy and their subsidiary label Swing. Plus the later releases from this period that Ed Engel released first on vinyl and latter on CD. I've only listed the orginal B.T. Puppy releases I have NOT included the Margo brothers West Coast recordings on their reactivated B.T. Puppy label. (Nor have I included releases by Jay Siegel's Tokens on the East Coast).
A number of the recordings I've listed from Ed Engel's Crystal Ball CD's may be from an earlier or later period but the sound seems right for the time period to me. As I mentioned earlier signed to RCA as performers the success of their productions led them to work as writers, producers, backing-vocalists and probably recording artists before they had officially left RCA. I suspect quite a few of Ed Engel's previously un-released cuts come from this twilight period. If it is a bit hazy as to when The Tokens 'B.T. Puppy' period properly began it's even harder to draw a line on their later releases with the same recordings coming out on B.T. Puppy, Warner Brothers and Buddah Records. Anyway more of this in part three.
In regards to most of the 45s the writing, producing and arranging credits have been taken directly from the record label. In regards to the CD's I've played detective, trawling through the B.M.I. and A.S.C.A.P. databases, the web and old music books & magazines. I'm fairly certain of my research but if I have made errors or you have details on the missing credits please get in touch. Some of the release dates are approximate.
Couple of tracks I've erroneously seen listed as aka The Tokens:
Lenny Coleman "Four Seasons" (Laurie 3290) '65; compiled on the fab Ace Records CD "Laurie Vocal Groups - The Sixties Sound" Ed Engel notes in his sleeve notes that Lenny Coleman was backed by Nino & The Ebbtides, two of The Ebbtides also wrote the song.
Eddy's Group "So Fine" / "A Message To The World" (B.T. Puppy 510); I love the A-side, (yes, the Johnny Otis song), the B-side an anti-war song was written and later released by The Tokens, don't know who Eddy's Group is but it doesn't sound like The Tokens to me.
Conversely it could well be that The Coeds "You're My First Love" / "Mark My Words" (Swing 101) IS The Tokens with an unnamed female vocalist.
Another track to be aware of is The Tokens "Suavito" / "Antes de Baila" BT Puppy 527".
This release is by The Tokens but the later 'The Tokens Featuring Mitch Margo', released in 1996. (In the original numbering sequence BT Puppy 527 is actually The Happenings "I Got Rhythm" / You're In a Bad Way").
With your help more info can be added to achieve a greater understanding of The Tokens recorded output. Send an email with any additions, corrections or confirmations all help given will be acknowledged in the CREDITS, likewise if you have comments to make I'd be pleased to hear them.

*1 | Into the weird and often wonderful world of The Tokens B.T. Puppy albums. Kicking off with a belter, no one with a love of music could fail to be impressed by this, the labels debut album. Billboard LP chart No. 148, 28th May 1966 |
|
*2 | The Tokens had already signed as performing (and producing) artists for Warner Bros. when this LP was released so perhaps understandably they used their side of the album to showcase their 'hits' but five tracks from their earlier LP was a tad excessive. The only new recording, and only available on this LP was "Laugh", which The Monkees had released on their "More of..." LP earlier in the year. Billboard LP chart No. 134, 12th August 1967 |
|
*3 | I try to make more sense of the B.T. Puppy LP's releases later on the site but a few observations: "Life Is Groovy" had been a small hit, Billboard Easy Listening chart No. 23 and 'bubbled under' at No. 110 but this was in the first few months of 1967 and the later singles had hardly created any action. The album was not released until July 1969. Still, I guess the hope could have been that the audience for this type of LP was less transient in their musical taste than that of the pop and rock fans and the "Dodge Is Groovy" commercial had kept "Life Is Groovy" a well known recording. The album featured newly recorded material, the cover of The Ohio Express "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" for instance and did receive a favourable Billboard review. |
|
*4 | Likewise the release of "Tokens Of Gold" could also have been with the hope of commercial success. 'Oldies' were now selling to a whole new audience and with The Tokens still a big name due to their recent chart success at Warner Bros. and Buddah an album chock full of 'golden oldies' made sense. (I say chock full but the LP did include the groups final B.T. Puppy 45, the surfy "Let It Ride" & "One Face In The Crowd". Recording dates are unclear, a number of the cuts had been released before but many where seeing there debut. Tracks unique to this album: "Sweet Little Sixteen" & "I Got A Woman" (A mention of "Little Girl Of Mine", this is included on "Tonight I Fell In Love With The Tokens" but the CD version has a spoken intro.) |
|
*5 | The release of these two LP's is more sperious. "The Greatest Moments With The Tokens" isn't... a very good LP but as with "December 5th" it's a mish mash of some earlier tracks and previously unreleased/new recordings. Love The Tokens you'll love the albums but some strange musical choices. Tracks unique to "The Greatest Moments With..." "Snow Queen", "Little Girl-Little Girl", "Happy Now"& "Cherry". Goffin & King may be amused to see their song "You're My Girl" credited to Cahn & Styne! Tracks unique to "December 5th": "Magic Love", "Beach Party", "Dirty Old Beach", "Take A Good Hard Look" & "Brick Castle" |
|
*6 | There is lots of info about this LP on the web and the sleeve notes to the three versions of the CD that have been released. Bracketing the album alongside The Beach Boys "Smile" & The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" as a 'Lost Classic' etc. does seem to stretch its importance somewhat but there are some very good moments. The album is Mitch Margo's baby, the group is credited as writers but this is more due to the way the Tokens shared their credits, Mitch was the writer on all bar Brute Force's brief "G54321 (Girl On 6). Warner Brothers get a hammering for not releasing the album originally but as they did release some of the tracks as 45s to little or no reaction I can't blame them. |

The Tokens side of this feature brief song i.d. intros by members Mitch Margo, Phil Margo, Brute Force, Jay Siegel, and Hank Medress. The four vocal tracks plus the instro close that features Hank Medress should be heard when you enter the site on the first four pages. If not try with a different browser! I do not know enough about the "Hear's To Veterans" LP's to know if the instro is unique to this album, if not it could easily have been played by the group. Interesting that Brute Force is 'officially' noted as a 'Token'. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" does sound, to me, like the original RCA recording. |
*1 | Picture cover, clear yellow vinyl 'grey area' EP: Mo-Donna Presents 8 "Great Shakes" Commercials Side A, Spencer Davis Group, The Who, Blues Magoos, The Happenings & a bonus Stone Poney's Pepsi jingle. Side B, The Tokens, Dusty Springfield, The Yardbirds, The Chiffons & The Troggs with a jingle for H.I.S. I think the EP was released mid seventies. The Tokens recorded at least 4 versions of this jingle, a shortened version is on The Tokens "Golden Moments Of Our Past" (Crystal Ball 1036) CD. |

*1 | If you've read this far you're obviously a fan of The Tokens and already have these two CD's. They are bit frustrating, no writer's credits or dates of recording and some of the tracks that are listed as unreleased were and others that weren't had been. But what the heck just be grateful to Ed Engel that he got the stuff released. "Tonight I Fell In Love with The Tokens" focus's on the doo-wop sides with plenty of unreleased, alternative versions and rare cuts. "Golden Moments of Our Past" includes this type of material but also includes their demos "Joy Ride" for Randy & The Rainbows & "She Still Remembers Tony" for Del Shannon, examples of their later works and a whole CD of commercials.
